Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) surgery is a great option for people with thin corneas or irregular corneas
Another type of refractive surgery offered by Dr. Nissirios is Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) surgery. Like SMILE and LASIK, this surgery helps patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
If you’re not a candidate for LASIK or SMILE surgery, don’t worry. PRK surgery is a great option for people with thin corneas or irregular corneas. PRK works by reshaping the surface of the cornea, rather than cutting a flap like LASIK. This procedure is similar to LASIK in that a laser is used to reshape the cornea, but PRK is less invasive.
During PRK surgery, the surface of the cornea is removed, which allows the laser to reshape the cornea. The recovery time for PRK surgery is typically longer than LASIK or SMILE because the cornea takes longer to heal. It can take up to a week or more for vision to stabilize and up to a few months for full recovery.
Like LASIK and SMILE, PRK surgery has a high success rate. Patients who undergo PRK surgery report a significant improvement in their vision, and many no longer need to wear glasses or contact lenses.
If you’re interested in learning more about PRK surgery, schedule a consultation with Dr. Nissirios. He will be able to evaluate your eyes and determine if you’re a good candidate for this procedure.
